Will the Toronto Maple Leafs trade one of their two best prospects?
Itβs no secret the Maple Leafs are looking to trade for a scoring winger, and at this point it feels like we are beating the same drum.
Sportsnet hockey insider Nick Kypreos wonders if the Toronto Maple Leafs will trade one of prospects Ben Danford or Easton Cowan. βWhile the Maple Leafs would like to add a scoring winger, theyβre limited by a lack of trade assets compared to other teams. Many clubs are expected to inquire about Easton Cowan, but heβs considered untouchable for now.
Ben Danford could be a more attainable prospect, though opinions around the league vary on whether heβll top out as a bottom-pair defenceman or develop into a top-four option,β said Kypreos.
Is it worth trading their future?
Toronto is in win-now mode, but at the same time they donβt have many top prospects like Ben Danford and Easton Cowan, so the teamβs hands are tied. In my opinion, if a trade comes up where the Leafs canβt say no, they should consider it. Toronto has the chance to take a play out of the Vegas Golden Knightsβ playbook, where they trade their future but remain competitive.
A good example for a trade could be the LA Kings sending Adrian Kempe, who is a UFA at the end of the season, to the Leafs with a contract extension for Cowan and a first-round pick β potentially more.
With Brad Treliving, you donβt know what he has up his sleeve, but this is something that will be closely watched in Toronto.
